For 2022, we plan to host the second edition of Hackathon for Good in India as a week-long event while keeping the tone of the event the same with the right blend of technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and policy-making. The event will include keynote speakers and panel discussions on Applying Data Science and AI for the SDGs during the opening and closing ceremony. Technical, Domain-specific, and Business Development Mentoring will be provided for the teams who participate in the hackathon. We want to encourage teams to prototype with Data and AI by providing access to data, tools, challenges, team members, training, and mentoring.

Congratulations to New Designers, the winner of #HackathonforGood #TheHague4!

The challenge they worked on  was combating horizontal fraud and their focus was on the problem of student housing scamming. What was their concept behind? This is what they said:

“"Hello! We are TrustHousing — the first student housing scamming detection and prevention system.

We help international students who, due to lack of experience and knowledge of the Dutch housing market, are easy targets for scammers. The product is a browser extension and website service all powered by our own TrustMark™ algorithm. The algorithm detects red flags in online conversations and housing ads. Our platform also offers a guide into the Dutch housing market and a safe place to close the deal with landlords. Students now have an expert that is always inside their device to help them safely find a home in the Netherlands."

We at Hackathon for Good love what they came up with and hope they will continue with their solution!

New designers win The Hague 4!

The challenge they worked on  was combating horizontal fraud and their focus was on the problem of student housing scamming. What was their concept behind? This is what they said.

During the Hackathon for Good The Hague, 18 teams worldwide worked on four different challenges. More than 100 tech talents, business pioneers, and entrepreneurial changemakers participated in the first fully online edition.

The jury awarded the second prize of € 1.000- to team Chakra for their open-source solution based on building a single page web application with an intuitive Reach Front end. The jury was very impressed by the technical solution, the focus on end-users, and the solution’s scalability.

The team, consisting of participants Anita Ganti, Chris Maxwell & Yogendrasingh Pawar, each heard about Hackathon for Good and wanted to use their diverse experience to improve access to justice. ‘’

We were sure we wanted to show the challenge owners and the jury a fully working application that could automate the task they were facing. They had heard about the power of AI, and we wanted to show the technology in action for a sample text before the end of the 48 hour Hackathon.‘’

Team member Anita Ganti recalls the moment when the jury announced them as the 2nd prize winner: 

‘’We were all ecstatic and thrilled. We built the HADEDA app as a full-stack web-app to automate the process of redacting sensitive data from legal documents and to make The Hague more transparent. To be recognized by the very talented jury for this effort is indeed an honor.’’

Deepfakes use deep-learning artificial intelligence to replace the likeness of one person with another in video and other digital media. There are concerns that deepfake technology can be used to create fake news and misleading, counterfeit videos.

How can Find Out Why help with deepfakes?

Find out Why can help with AI for online news/fact checking. Deepfakes are becoming more and more of a problem and AI can certainly help in debunking some of the junk news posts or videos that circulate online and add to the amount of mis/disinformation around COVID-19, hate speech, xenophobia, etc.

Why is Find Out Why bringing in a challenge for the Hackathon for Good 2021?

The technology that is used to create deepfakes and synthetic media is the same. However, the problem is that deepfakes are deployed to cause harm. Although sophisticated deepfake detection tools exist, there is no free, easy-to-use tool that is widely used and looks at video, audio, and text simultaneously. If we share, comment, or engage with deepfake content unknowingly across different social media platforms, we feed the algorithm and contribute to spreading harm. Therefore, we believe it should be easy and effortless for everyone to verify authentic digital content in our daily lives. If we succeed in developing an innovative way to confront deepfakes online, we could help everyone navigate digital content with more competence.

What is the challenge from Find Out Why for the Hackathon for Good 2021?

The Hackathon for Good community is growing and so do the opportunities it opens up for participants. The 4th edition in The Hague will have an exclusive Bonus prize provided by our partner ESRI.

Esri is the global Market leader in geospatial technologies, founded in 1969  to help solve some of the world’s most difficult problems. We do so by supporting our users’ important work with a commitment to science, sustainability, community, education, research, and positive change.

The ESRI team has chosen to offer a bonus prize available to all challenges and teams at the Hackathon for Good 4 The Hague. They want to honour solutions that are using maps and geospatial analytics to solve and communicate the challenges.

Which challenges are eligible for the Mothership Missions bonus prize?

All challenges and teams are eligible for this bonus prize as long as they are making use of the ESRI platform and have indicated so in the pre-Pitch summary form.

What is the criteria to be applicable for the bonus prize?

Before the Pitch event on the 28th of November, there will be ajury member present from ESRI to evaluate all solution summaries and to determine which pitching sessions to attend.

The ESRI bonus prize of 300 euro will be awarded to the team with the best approach of utilizing ESRI tools to solve and/or communicate the challenge. 

The main criteria to be applicable as a team are:

The support programme is designed to equip hackers with a range of tools and methods that facilitate the design of their solutions. It encompasses all stages of the design development process, from defining the problem to presenting their ideas. As an added bonus, hackers are introduced to data sponsors, offering them the opportunity to ask questions and become familiar with advanced tools.

Support Programme – What's It About?

The support programme is designed to equip hackers with a range of tools and methods that facilitate the design of their solutions. It encompasses all stages of the design development process, from defining the problem to presenting their ideas.

Business pioneers, tech talents & experts in artificial intelligence, big data and coding are challenged to develop data solutions for a better world. They will work on challenges by Municipality of The Hague, the Police, EVE & The Hague Legal Tech Alliance.

The Hackathon for Good - The Hague is hosted by the Municipality of The Hague and organized by The Hague Tech, in close collaboration with the Hague innovation ecosystems consisting of the hubs: The Hague Security Delta, The Hague Humanity Hub, and the programs YES! Delft, WorldStartup, Data Science Initiative, and Digital Competence & Education Center. During the weekend of 27, 28, and 29 November, talent from all over the world develop innovative solutions for global social issues. Each team works on a data solution for one of the participating organizations. The total prize money is € 3,500.

The following challenges will be worked on during the hackathon:

 Shared mobility is considered the future of urban mobility. It saves space, helps reduce emissions, and is sustainable. The Municipality of The Hague stimulates the use of shared mobility for a cleaner and healthier city. But does shared mobility have the expected impact on the city? Will car owners exchange their private car for shared cars? How much does shared mobility contribute to CO2 reduction in the city? Does bicycle-sharing replace the use of public transport, or does it generate new journeys? The city now faces the challenge of obtaining the data and information to answer these questions.

 Environmental crime is on the rise and is now widely recognized as one of the largest criminal areas in the world. To combat environmental crimes effectively, they must first be easier to detect. Not only law enforcement officers, but especially citizens, need to know what is happening in their backyard. Citizens need to know what to watch out for and when to call the authorities. What this requires is a system that can process all kinds of different data from different sensors, cluster the resources, determine what is expected within a cluster, and then detect anomalies within a cluster. Subsequently, subscribers in a specific area should receive a warning about the anomaly, including a particular context so that the citizen knows what to look for and information about when to contact which government agency. The challenge is to create something more user-friendly and natural that evokes a call to action that is relevant to the user.

 A good legal system is essential for the proper functioning of an economy. EVE's mission is to give everyone access to a court of law. Eve is faced with several problems that she challenges participants to solve. It is striking that many entrepreneurs in legal disputes are looking for free or affordable legal advice about their position. With Eve you don't need a lawyer, but people hardly dare to go to Eve's court without advice about their legal position. The resources currently available are clearly inadequate. The challenge is: Design a tool with which every citizen can determine their legal position in a conflict. In any case, this tool should be free and simple. The tool should not depend on or be influenced by commercial elements.

 The Hague Legal Tech Alliance (THLTA) is an initiative of the Municipality of The Hague and Pels Rijcken. THLTA is convinced that technology can contribute to the transparency of the law and case law, without undermining the protection of privacy, for example through the use of automatic cleaning programs. THLTA is challenging participants in this year's Hackathon for Good to create mock-ups of technology applications that contribute to document generation. The transparency and privacy requirements of these documents should be taken into account and fulfilled directly through the application. In addition, the mock-ups must contain or contain automatic cleaning properties. THLTA also hopes that the participants in this Hackathon will gain more insight into (future) possibilities to facilitate the traditional legal institutions in The Hague to also make the step towards a digital society in other areas.

Hackathon for Good started in The Hague with the mission to connect AI and Data to the world of Humanitarian Development and Aid. After three successful editions, Fall 2021 will bring 

 of this annual event. Teams from all over the whole world will develop innovative solutions for global social issues, using data.

Hackathon for Good is organized by The Hague Tech and WorldStartup, in collaboration with the Hague’s innovation ecosystem consisting of the many innovation hubs and programs in The Hague such as Impact City, The Hague Security Delta, The Hague Humanity Hub and YES!Delft. Project manager Sophie mentioned "As organizer of Hackathon for Good, it is refreshing to see how many organisations in the tech community are enthusiastic about collaborating to solve social issues."

, won the first prize of €2.500-. The challenge they were provided with was one concerning the tracking of environmental crimes. By creating an online platform that cultivates a community, people become empowered to take action and let the community and organizations know what is going on.

The Hackathon for Good contributes to finding upcoming talent, stimulating access to relevant data, supporting progressive startups, expanding the international network, arranging inspiring encounters and creating new innovative and technological solutions to urgent challenges with a global impact. For the 2021 edition, there are currently two challenges concerning disinformation and cyber-security. One challenge concerns drones and two more challenges concerning circular economy and food waste.

Hackathon for Good tech solutions for social issues

After three successful editions, Fall 2021 will bring 

The 'Hackathon for good The Hague 2018' in The Hague was won by team Monkey Code with a solution to prevent land grabbing by combining satellite data with recent social media data. During the Hackathon for good, 27 teams of more than 22 nationalities worked on the development of innovative data solutions for problems focused on humanitarian disasters (Red Cross), fake news (NCIA), evidence (ICC), emergency funds (World Vision) and land grabbing (Asser Institute).

More than 120 tech talents from the Netherlands and abroad participated in the Hackathon for good this weekend. The jury chose Monkey Code as the winner because the team followed all the way through to find a solution for end uses in communities. Interesting was also the clever use of social media as part of their solution. In first place, team Monkey Code won a cash prize of € 10,000,-. The hackathon is one of the first projects of the Data Science Initiative, an initiative of tech entrepreneurs, universities, government and knowledge institutions in The Hague that are committed to peace, justice and security through big data and Artificial Intelligence: Tech for good.

Saskia Bruines, alderman Education, Knowledge Economy, International: "This hackathon is a good example of what we want to convey as the city of peace and justice. Working together with tech entrepreneurs, universities and knowledge institutions on solutions for global problems. It is a special event that I hope we can organize even more in the future!"

Winners Hackathon for good
The first prize was won by team Monkey Code with their open source solution based on combining satellite data with recent social media data (e.g. relevant Twitter hashtags) to predict areas that are vulnerable for land grabbing. According to the jury, the challenge required redefining and selecting the right information sources first. This team worked on the Asser Institute challenge: how to prevent land grabbing.

The second prize went to team Hack4Peace with a solution for the NATO/NCIA challenge how to detect fake news. This teams’ tool involves building a data set with inflammatory texts and images. Through AI based imagery and textual analysis, the tool can recognize propaganda and fake news. Part of the solution is an end user browser extension that detects and filters propaganda, meanwhile collecting new data to sharpen and scale the algorithm. The jury was very impressed by the technical solution, the focus on end users and scalability.

The third prize was won by team PWC2 with their solution for the Red Cross/510 challenge: how to estimate damage in disaster areas. PWC2’s approach was based on combining drone and satellite imagery to come to automated, yet very precise damage estimation, ideal for prioritizing aid. The jury praised the accuracy and speed of damage estimation, as well as the practical approach that can be implemented immediately.

What is the Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport?

The foundation Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport (RHIA) was established by Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA) and the municipality of Rotterdam in May 2019. Its goal is the development of the RTHA as a next generation airport and thereby increasing economic, environmental, and societal value. RHIA is the testing ground for the next generation airport and combines innovations for the next economy and the airport of the future. RHIA is also acknowledged as testing ground by Royal Schiphol Group.

What are the main activities of Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport?

RHIA consists of a small and flexible team that collaborates with partners from businesses, governments, and knowledge institutes. With their network of public and private partners, they initiate new collaborations and build successful project consortiums. RHIA facilitates a unique testing ground at the RTHA where new services and products are tested under real conditions. Through this all, RHIA facilitates and accelerates new, scalable projects to export to other sectors in the region and the rest of the world.

What is the ambition of Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport?

The Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport wants to become a next generation airport that is connected and accessible, clean, silent, and circular that facilitates work, education, and investments. RHIA translates this into two themes: next aviation and next connection. Next aviation: all technology that contributes to the future of aviation, for example silent airplanes and sustainable fuels, but also circular components and the optimal travel experience. Exemplary projects: Airport Technology Lab, Fieldlab Next Aviation, Synthetic Fuel and HyCargo. Next connection: an airport that is both physically and digitally connected, and intertwined with the region. Think about the energy system, mobility, and the labor market. Exemplary projects: Smart Energy Systems, Solar Park, Competence Centre & Learning Campus, Last Mile.

Why is Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport bringing in a challenge about drones in the Hackathon for Good 2021?

Drones will soon become a standard element in logistics and all kinds of urban services. To ensure safe usage of the airspace, it seems inevitable to create special control centers for drones. The first priority for establishing observational and control functions should be focused on city centres and key locations such as airports, taking into consideration all stakeholders and landscapes. It is necessary for users of drones to be able to reserve their journey from A to B. After their application, they should receive a time slot and a route, considering buildings and other obstacles in the city as well as the hierarchy of passage. Some users will apply for a “fenced” cubic to use their drone for a specific purpose. Authorities will have the possibility to overrule this for urgent missions.  The airport is a special situation. In this case, it’s necessary to also take into account the time slots of planes landing and taking off. Next to the visualisation of drone movements outside and on the premises of the airport, pilots would also like to have insights of drones in their vicinity. Many questions arise when you start thinking about the tools that are required for all these users and situations.

What is the challenge from the Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport at the Hackathon for Good 2021?
